Learning to think outside the box, a graduate story by Stéphanie Stafrach

Learning to Think Outside the Box

As an avid crafter and crochet addict Stéphanie Stafrach had accumulated a lot of hand-made items. Having decided to sell them she turned to our professionally accredited Crochet Skill Stage 3 course to develop in-depth skills to sell with confidence. This is her #MyStitchJourney.

“The thing I am most grateful for is the self confidence I’ve gained from this course. Now when there is something I would like to do, I will not try to find a pattern, I will work around it, I will find a way, a solution to create it. It is not daunting anymore, I know I have the skill to do it, I am not afraid to fail and do it again. Such a wonderful feeling.”

I began to crochet when I was pregnant with my third boy. I followed a 4-week course in my local library, the first two weeks I was heavily pregnant and the last two weeks I followed the course with my baby sleeping on me. I even crocheted my first scarf while in labour. Such wonderful memories! I would crochet every single day when I had some time, usually at nights when the baby was sleeping. So when I began this course I already had 2 years experience of crocheting, but mostly following patterns.

Motivation For Studying?

I decided that I could not keep everything I was crocheting in my own house and I decided to try to sell them. To be able to do that, I wanted a professional course in crochet. I wanted to develop my skills in depth and to learn everything I could about crochet.

I have seen a lot of courses online but I was attracted to the School of Stitched Textiles because the course was accredited by the City and Guilds, the courses look serious and very complete.

What Has The Course Helped With?

The course has been incredible in so many ways. I learned so many new techniques that I was not even aware of. And it has saved me so much time to be guided in my learning process. I’ve learned how to design something, step by step and gained so much theoretical knowledge about the yarn. But more than anything, I’ve learned not to be afraid to think outside-the-box and how to start planning my own business.

But the thing I am most grateful for is the self confidence I’ve gained from this course. Now when there is something I would like to do, I will not try to find a pattern, I will work around it, I will find a way, a solution to create it. It is not daunting anymore, I know I have the skill to do it, I am not afraid to fail and do it again. Such a wonderful feeling.

What’s Next?

I will definitely continue to study more and more, even if it is small workshops but I really want to discover more crafts and to have a wide range of skills available to be able to express what I really want in my art.

But I also want to open my business in Crochet and Macramé for weddings. I am currently working on it and on the business plan. Providing crochet courses/workshops is also in my line of sight. I am really busy and I am loving every step of this journey, I can’t wait to see where it will take me.

Advice For New Students?

I would definitively recommend this course to anyone who is interested in craft and crochet. The benefits are huge and it is so worth it. Huge knowledge, self confidence, speaking to like-minded people to name just a few.

My advice is to enjoy every minute of this journey and to listen to what we really want inside of us. This course provided the time and the space to explore, to think-outside-the-box, to test new things, new materials so just be crazy and go for it!
