“The course was everything I had hoped for – and more! I’d really not expected the journey of personal discovery it would take me on and how much it would encourage me to look at the world through fresh eyes. In particular, it ignited and nurtured an inner respect for colour and aspects of modern art.”
Where it began
My journey with the School of Stitched Textiles (SST) began with an unwanted Christmas gift from my husband: a sewing machine.
A little guilty of how I’d initially dismissed it, in the New Year I decided to give it a go. To my surprise, I loved it!
Over the next few months I made many things – items of clothing, accessories and display pieces. What I lacked in skill I tried to compensate with enthusiasm and passion.
Motivation for studying
I’d really fallen in love with textiles. I visited a couple of sewing and quilting festivals and attended various workshops. I then discovered the quilting world. I especially loved its history and creativity and was eager to learn much more. I explored online options and I felt the Patchwork and Quilting course, by SST, was just what I was seeking. I appreciated its:
- Comprehensive content
- City & Guilds accreditation
- Flexibility – which would allow me to work around other important aspects of my life
Biggest takeaways
The course was everything I had hoped for – and more! I’d really not expected the journey of personal discovery it would take me on and how much it would encourage me to look at the world through fresh eyes. In particular, it ignited and nurtured an inner respect for colour and aspects of modern art.
Having trained and worked in the museum sector, I’ve always been passionate about art and artefacts. However, I have never really been drawn to or emotionally connected with modern art . The course expanded my ability to view things from different perspectives and taught me about the use of media, techniques and colour. It has completely changed my attitude towards modern art, for which I’m deeply grateful. It’s expanded my mind, opening up a whole new world of thoughts, ideas and possibilities that I’d never have considered otherwise.
Tutor support
Lastly, credit must go to the encouragement of my excellent tutor. From what I’ve seen, the standard and commitment of SST tutors is exceptional. In particular, my tutor’s feedback on my work was always incredibly supportive and thoughtful. Frankly, it was some of the most heartfelt and thought-provoking feedback I’ve ever received – she really cared about my work and brought in personal experiences from her own life and work and how my work and ideas touched her. This inspired me and provoked real emotions in me that helped bring my pieces alive.
I encourage new students not to be worried to ask for help from your tutor. Failing to ask for advice and guidance misses out on a fantastic resource of knowledge and experience.
