Fiona McGilvray often wished she had pursued a more ‘creative career’. However, when the opportunity to channel energy into doing something she loved arose, she knew she had to take it. Having studied our intermediate Patchwork & Quilting course (Skill Stage 3), Fiona graduated with, not only a huge sense of achievement, but a valuable reminder that she is a skilled maker. As a child I learned English Paper Piecing from my mum, more recently and before I started studying with the School of Stitched Textiles, I had gained a basic knowledge of machine piecing techniques from books, the internet and by attending classes in my local area.
I have always enjoyed crafting and have often wished I could have pursued a more creative career. However, lacking both the skills and knowledge, as well as the confidence in my ability, I had resigned myself to developing skills in this craft area as a retirement plan. Then, following changes in my professional life, I found myself looking for a new direction earlier than anticipated and with the time and energy to channel into this long-held area of interest.
Having heard from a friend about the School of Stitched Textiles, I researched the courses on offer, finally deciding that Patchwork & Quilting at Skill Stage 3 was the right one for me, it seemed a natural progression from the crafting I had been busy with during Covid, when I had regularly fed into research on Crafting during Coronavirus and sewed masks for charity. The course would provide me with the skills to create and produce my own work.
Studying With the School of Stitched Textiles
Investing in studying for a recognised qualification like City and Guilds was a big commitment, both exciting and challenging at the same time, but having a goal to work towards was also a huge motivator for me.
As an accredited course, organised into 12 manageable modules, the content at Skill Stage 3 is comprehensive, and provides a clear path in developing a set of skills (rather than attending a variety of different short courses), progressing from beginner to an advanced level under the guidance and with the expertise of an accredited tutor. Reading the graduate stories, gave me a flavour of how I would build confidence in my own creative abilities and learn about the design process. The School of Stitched Textiles online teaching methods allow flexibility to fit study around other commitments.
Aside from the practical skills I’ve developed, I’ve learned that I can still surprise myself and that with a little determination and enthusiasm, I am able to achieve results beyond my expectations.
Your Advice for New Students
I would definitely recommend this course. Without a doubt, it has been a hugely rewarding and enriching experience from start to finish and has left me with a desire to push myself further. My tutor has always been positive, providing direction and inspiration when needed. The online community of students also provides support, encouragement and inspiration, no matter which course of study you have chosen.
If you’re thinking of studying or about to start then enjoy the experience! Be sure to plan, as life will invariably get in the way at times. You will learn more than you imagine possible before starting and surprise yourself and get great pleasure from what you will be able to create by the end of your course. The confidence it builds, will also give you the courage to try your hand at other crafts you might not previously have attempted.
